Synk
Backup, synchronization and archiving for the Macintosh.

Readme

Thank you for downloading Synk 5. Here are some quick notes to help you get started. You may view this document again anytime by choosing "Open Readme" from Synk's Help menu.

Introduction and Quick Start

Synk is a synchronization tool, which means that it can examine the contents of two folders and merge the contents so that both folders have the same, up-to-date contents. You can limit the synchronization to one direction, which produces a "backup" action.

Start by dragging the two folders you want to synchronize to the source areas of the Synk document, then choose whether you want a synchronization or a single-direction backup. All you need to do then is click "Run." Easy enough?

There are a number of options in the other tabs, as well as a log to give you more detailed information about the run. Synk has extensive Help files that describe the use of all of these options. There is also a section with helpful information about how to easily back up your data. Synk Help can be accessed through the Help menu.

Compatibility

Synk is compatible with anything that the operating system can mount, including any format of internal or external hard drive, any format writeable removable media (floppy, Zip drive, etc.), and AFP or Samba shared volumes. However, it is important to keep in mind that different filesystems and networking protocols have different restrictions on files and different behaviors regarding issues such as case-sensitivity. See Synk Help for more information.

Registration

I have worked long and hard on Synk 5--it is a complete rewrite of the application, consisting of over 15,000 lines of code. If you find Synk useful, please register it and support a starving student with $50K in student loans hanging over his head. Register now! If you don't find Synk useful, please let me know why! Email me and tell me how I can make it meet your needs.

Synk 5 is shareware. You may download and use Synk free of charge for 30 days, after which a registration code is necessary to keep the full functionality of the program. Click here for more information.

Legal Info

Unfortunately, I have seen too many people who try to make something that's useful for people end up sued for everything they have. As such, while I promise to do my best to make Synk bug-free and safe for your data, as I am merely human I cannot promise that I will have a 100% success rate. If something goes wrong and you lose something, while I will feel very bad, the below legal blurb means that I am not legally liable for anything.

If you experience any problems with Synk, by all means contact me, and I will do my best to resolve them. If you find a bug that could cause data loss, it will obviously become my top priority to fix.
